Dzmitryi Sushchyk

Dzmitry Sushchyk from Navahrudak was arrested by Russian border guards while crossing the border of Belarus.

He was transferred to Belarusian law enforcers and placed in a pre-trial detention center on criminal charges of 'insulting the president' (Article 368 of the Criminal Code) and 'desecrating the state symbols' (Article 370 of the Criminal Code).

On March 2, 2022, the Navahrudak district court found Dzmitry Sushchyk guilty of contempt of the president of Belarus and sentenced him to 1.5 years of jail. Besides, the court found him guilty of desecration of the flag and coat-of-arms of Belarus and sentenced him to 1 year in jail. As a result, Sushchyk was cumulatively sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment in a general-security penal colony. By the decision of the court, Sushchyk's stay under house arrest and in custody was to be counted as part of his sentence.

In April 2022, Dzmitry Sushchyk was transferred to penal colony #8 in Orša, Viciebsk region, where he faced pressure from the administration: he was deprived of parcels, phone calls, and visits, and his correspondence became irregular. In June 2022, he was placed in a high-security solitary confinement cell and deprived of visits and phone calls for nine months. It is also known that he is regularly placed in a punishment cell for "violations of the internal regulations", and the time spent in a punishment cell was never counted as the time in a high-security solitary confinement cell but added to it.

In early September 2022, it became known that a trial took place in Orša to change the punishment level for the political prisoner to the prison regime. Dzmitry Sushchyk was sent to prison #1 in Hrodna. Upon his arrival, he was immediately issued with two violations and was going to be placed in a punishment cell again.

On April 13, 2023, Dzmitry's mother died.

It was reported that on September 1, 2023, the trial took place in Orsha. Dzmitry was convicted under Part 1 of Art. 411 of the Criminal Code (Malicious disobedience to the demands of administration of the correctional institution). Dzmitry's case was considered by Judge Natallia Kozel. The Judge added one year and 15 days to Dzmitry’s sentence. The political prisoner was supposed to be released on August 18, but this did not happen due to re-arrest and trial on a new criminal case.

At the end of December it became known that the political prisoner was already in penal colony No. 8. The administration of the institution placed Sushchyk in a punishment cell, but the duration and reasons are unknown.
